How to reduce ad costs on Google Ads
Introduction
Quick answer: To reduce Google Ads costs, stop paying for irrelevant clicks and raise the share of clicks that convert. Review the search terms report weekly and add negative keywords, tighten match types, group keywords into tightly themed ad groups, improve ad relevance and landing pages to raise Quality Score, and make sure conversion tracking is accurate before relying on automated bidding.

Why Google Ads costs get high
Google charges per click, so waste comes from clicks that were never going to buy: wrong search intent, broad keywords, poor ad relevance, or a page that does not convert. The fix is usually to buy fewer, better clicks.
1. Clean up search terms and add negatives
Open Insights and reports, then the search terms report. For each term that spent money without value, add it as a negative keyword. Typical negatives for businesses selling a paid service include free, jobs, salary, course, tutorial, DIY, cheap (if you are premium) and competitor names you do not want. Add negatives at campaign level, and use shared negative lists across campaigns.
2. Use match types deliberately
Broad match reaches more queries and works best with strong conversion data and smart bidding. Phrase and exact match give more control. Start tighter, review the search terms, then widen when you have proof. See the keyword types guide for details.
3. Improve Quality Score and ad relevance
Quality Score is a diagnostic based on expected click-through rate, ad relevance and landing page experience. Higher quality generally lowers cost for the same position. To improve it:
- Group closely related keywords together.
- Put the main keyword naturally in the headline.
- Match landing page content to the search.
- Speed up the page and make it mobile friendly.
4. Segment by intent
| Intent | Example | Approach |
|---|---|---|
| High | buy, pricing, near me, hire | Give budget priority |
| Medium | best, vs, review | Test with caution |
| Low | what is, how to, free | Exclude or handle with content, not ads |
5. Control location, schedule and device
- Target locations you actually serve, and choose “presence” targeting if you only want people physically in or regularly in those places.
- Check performance by hour and day. Reduce bids or pause when calls cannot be answered.
- Review device performance and adjust if one device converts much worse.
6. Make bidding match your data
Smart bidding such as target CPA or target ROAS needs reliable conversions. If tracking is wrong, it will optimize for the wrong thing. Start with maximizing conversions, and move to targets when results are stable. Set targets slightly above current performance, not wildly aggressive.
7. Pay attention to the Search Partners and Display settings
For lead generation, review whether Search Partners and the Display Network expansion on search campaigns produce quality conversions. Turn them off if they only add weak traffic.
8. Test ad copy
A higher click-through rate can raise quality and lower cost. Test headlines that reflect the search and state a clear benefit. See the ad copy guide.
Frequently asked questions
How often should I review search terms?
Weekly for most accounts, and daily when launching new campaigns or broad match keywords.
Does a higher Quality Score always mean lower costs?
Not always, but better expected click-through rate, relevance and landing page experience generally help you pay less for the same position.
Should I lower my daily budget to cut cost?
Lowering budget reduces spend but not necessarily cost per conversion. Remove waste first, then decide budget based on results.
