How to increase ROAS on Facebook Ads

Ad campaign performance dashboard illustration

Introduction

Quick answer: ROAS (return on ad spend) is revenue divided by ad spend. To increase it on Facebook Ads, raise revenue per click (conversion rate and average order value), lower the cost per click, and give Meta accurate purchase data with values through the Pixel and Conversions API. Check profit as well: a high ROAS can still lose money if margins are thin.

What is ROAS?

ROAS = revenue from ads / ad spend. Spending 1,000 and earning 4,000 gives a ROAS of 4. Break-even ROAS depends on margin: if your gross margin is 40 percent, break-even ROAS is 1 / 0.4 = 2.5. Anything under that loses money before other costs.

The three levers

LeverMeaningExamples
Conversion rateMore buyers per clickFaster page, better offer, trust badges
Average order valueMore revenue per buyerBundles, upsells, free-shipping thresholds
Cost per clickCheaper trafficStronger creative, broader audiences

Step 1: Make purchase data accurate

Send purchase events with correct value and currency through both Pixel and Conversions API, and deduplicate them. Meta cannot optimize toward value it cannot see.

Step 2: Improve creative for buyers

  • Show the product in use and address the main objection.
  • Include proof: reviews, numbers, guarantees.
  • Test offers, not only designs.

Step 3: Raise order value

  • Offer bundles and “frequently bought together” items.
  • Set a free-shipping threshold slightly above your average order.
  • Add a one-click upsell after purchase where it fits your store.

Step 4: Fix the buying experience

Reduce steps at checkout, offer the payment methods your customers use, and make the page fast on mobile. Recover abandoned carts with retargeting ads and email or messaging follow-up.

Step 5: Structure for value

  • Keep a prospecting campaign for new customers and a smaller retargeting campaign for visitors and carts.
  • Use value-based bidding or minimum ROAS only when you have enough purchase volume.
  • Scale budgets gradually; large jumps can disrupt delivery.

Step 6: Judge ROAS correctly

Check attribution settings when comparing numbers. Platform ROAS and store revenue often differ, so compare blended results too: total revenue divided by total ad spend. Include returns and repeat purchases when you evaluate profit.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good ROAS on Facebook Ads?

It depends on your margin. Calculate break-even ROAS as 1 divided by gross margin, then aim above it with room for other costs.

Why is my ROAS dropping while spend increases?

Scaling usually reaches less responsive audiences, and creatives may be fatiguing. Scale in steps and keep adding fresh creative.

Is higher ROAS always better?

Not always. A very high ROAS may mean you are spending too little and missing profitable growth. Aim for the highest profit you can reach.
